Chapter 7

The Portal

A quarter of an hour later they were on their way, nodding and smiling at the centaurs they passed as though they were great friends.

Gabriella was riding on Martin’s back again, and after they left the herd behind Gabriella took a deep breath, and said suddenly, “Jerreth, I’m sorry I kissed you like that without asking. I just couldn’t think of any other way to get her to let you go, and I didn’t even know if it would work. Will you forgive me?”

Jerreth looked over at her with his strange minotaur smile, and said, “If you’ll turn me back into a centaur once we’re far enough away from Lajia, I’ll forgive you. This minotaur form is very strong, but it’s slow, and I prefer to at least look like half of myself.”

“All right, I will,” she replied.

He looked at her for a long moment, and then said, “Gabriella, thank you for rescuing me.” He paused for another long moment and added, “The kiss was nice, too.”

Gabriella looked at him almost in shock and her heart skipped a beat. Even though he looked like a minotaur at the moment, she found that she still liked him because she was getting to know him.

She smiled a little shyly, and remembered to breathe, and finally answered, “You’re welcome.”

Then she cleared her throat and said, “Jerreth, about our engagement… do you… do you want to be engaged to me? I mean, are you happy with our engagement?”

Jerreth grinned at her and said, “I am very glad that I’m engaged to you and not to Lajia, if that’s what you’re asking.”

She looked at him for a long moment, and then asked, “I mean would you go back and undo your oath if you could?”

He shook his head after thinking for a moment, touched her shoulder with his huge hand and answered, “No Gabriella. I’m glad we have the chance to get to know each other and without that oath, I may never have given you a real chance.”

She smiled at him and said, “I’m glad, too. I just wish that you didn’t feel obligated to marry me because of your oath. I want to know that if we end up together, it was a mutual decision.”

He looked straight into Jade’s eye and said, “Why don’t we just focus on becoming good friends for now? Friendship is what a good marriage should be based on after all. You don’t need to worry about my oath. It was my decision and mine alone and I am content with it. You just worry about your own decision.”

Gabriella looked at him with a smile, although she was not entirely convinced, and said, “All right Jerreth. Thank you. I feel a little better.”

After that, they started chatting again, although Gabriella was a little more quiet than usual.

Martin every once in a while told silly jokes that included lots of animal sounds to make them laugh. He was quite good at animal sounds.

Before they got to the portal, they stopped and Gabriella got off Martin’s back to fish out the compass from her pack.
